Is It "Israel"? The Name Written More Than 2,500 Times Was Not Spelled That Way

You have said "Israel" your whole life. You have heard it in church, on the news, on maps. You are sure of it. Now let me show you something that should stop you where you stand: that spelling is not the name that was written. Someone reached into the name of His own people and changed the very first letter. And once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

The name, in the oldest writing we have

Before English, and before the Square Script, the name was written in the oldest letters we know of, the Paleo Script. Here it is in all three forms:

Read the Paleo and the square from right to left. Look at the first letter, the one on the far right. That is the Yod. The Yod makes the "Y" sound. It is the letter His people's name begins with.

Now the number that should stop you cold

Here is the evidence, and the evidence is loud.

The name that begins with the Yod, Yashar’al, is written in the scriptures more than 2,500 times. More than two thousand five hundred times, this is the people He speaks to, corrects, gathers, and promises to save.

Now the contrast, because contrast is how the eyes finally see it. Go search every ancient Scroll we have for the name that starts with an "I," the way English spells "Israel." You will find it zero times. Not once. Zero. The ancient text does not begin the name with an "I." It begins it with the Yod, the "Y," more than 2,500 times.

One letter. Changed on every single page. Over 2,500 times.

What they did: they pulled the Yod

Look at the two spellings side by side.

In Lashon Qanaʿan it begins with the Yod, the "Y."

The English begins with an "I." Isra-el.

The "Y" sound at the front of His people's name was bent into an "I." You may think one letter is small. It is not small, because the Yod is the letter that carries the sound of the Most High into the name of His own people. Change the first letter of a name, and you can slowly change who a person thinks the name is even about. That is exactly what happened. People read "Israel" and picture a flag, a modern country, a people far away, anyone except themselves. The name was pointing one place. The changed spelling pointed them somewhere else.

Who told them to do this?

This is the question nobody asks, so ask it now. Who gave the order to change the name? Show the command in the text that says, "change the spelling of My people's name." There is none. No verse. No instruction. Not one.

Men did it. Translators and traditions did it, moving the name from Lashon Qanaʿan into Greek, then Latin, then English, filing the Yod down to an "I" along the way. It was a human decision, start to finish.

And here is what makes it heavy. The text did not stay silent about changing the words. It gave a direct command in the other direction. Dabarim (Deuteronomy) 4:2 says do not add to the word, and do not take away from it. Mishliy (Proverbs) 30:6 says do not add to His words. The instruction was: leave it alone. They changed it anyway. So this was not obedience. It was the exact thing they were told not to do.

Who the name was always for, and the door most people never saw

Now hear the part that was hidden from both sides.

Being Yashar’al was never only about bloodline. When the people came out of Mitsrayim, a mixed multitude came out with them. And the rule was plain: one Turah for the born Yashar’al and for the Gar, the outsider who joins. Bamidbar (Numbers) 15:16 says there is one Turah and one right-ruling for you and for the Gar who lives among you.

But watch how a person comes in, because this is the key. Yashar’al never becomes something else. The outsider joins Yashar’al. You come into His people, and you walk the same way everyone in it is called to walk, in obedience to Him. The door was never "become a separate people with a new name." The door was always "join His people, keep His Turah."

And this is why the count matters so much. The Mashiyakh Himself said He was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Yashar’al. He said it in Matithyahu (Matthew) 15:24, and again when He sent out the twelve in Matithyahu 10:6. Now the contrast one more time: how many times does the text say He came to erase Yashar’al and put a different, separately named nation in its place? Zero. The whole book leans on one name, more than 2,500 times, and most readers were pointed away from it by a single changed letter.

How this connects to the Turah

To be Yashar’al has always meant one thing: a people who keep the Turah of Yahuah. That is the whole reason the name is on them. It is why the Gar comes in by taking up the same Turah, not a different one. The promises to gather and restore Yashar’al are covenant promises, and the covenant is carried in the Turah. So when they changed the name, they did not only hide a people. They hid who the Turah was given to, and who is called to walk in it. Everything connects back to the Turah, and the Turah was given to Yashar’al.

Let us be honest about what is proven

The truth does not need to be stretched.

Proven: the name is written more than 2,500 times, always beginning with the Yod, the "Y." The English spelling that begins with "I" is not in the ancient Scrolls. The text commands no one to change it and forbids adding to or taking from the words (Dabarim 4:2, Mishliy 30:6). The Gar could join Yashar’al under one Turah (Bamidbar 15:16). The Mashiyakh named the lost sheep of the house of Yashar’al (Matithyahu 15:24, 10:6).

Not forced: "upright with Al" is our reading of the letters Y-Sh-R joined with Al. We mark it as our interpretation, not something the text spells out. And "more than 2,500" is the established range for how often the name appears, given as the honest estimate.

Now sit with it

More than 2,500 times, the book names one people: Yashar’al, beginning with the Yod. No command ever told anyone to change it. A clear command told them not to. They changed it anyway, and most people reading in English never saw the real name one single time.

Do not take my word for it. Go count it yourself. Then ask the question they never put to you:

If they were willing to change the first letter of the name written more than 2,500 times, and no verse ever told them they could, what else did they decide to change on their own?
