Is the City Really "Jerusalem"? The Name Is Yarushalam, and Shalum Is Inside It

You have said "Jerusalem" your whole life and never heard what was inside it. The English spelling smoothed the name down until the meaning disappeared. But the name in the text is Yarushalam, and hidden in the back half of it is a word you already know: Shalum, wholeness, soundness, peace. The city of the great King carries Shalum in its own name, and English buried it.

Before English, and before the Square Script, it was written in an older form of the letters, the Paleo Script. Here it is in all three forms:

What the word actually means

Yarushalam is a joined name. The back half is plainly Shalum, from the root shalam, to be whole, complete, sound, nothing missing and nothing broken. The front half is understood to carry the sense of a foundation, a founding, a place established. Put together, the name is heard as the founding of Shalum, the place established for wholeness and peace.

So the name is not an empty label. It is a claim about the city: this is the place set for wholeness, the city where Yahuah puts His peace. The meaning that English "Jerusalem" hides is right there in the letters, Shalum, carried in the name itself.

Read it in the text

See the name pointed straight at its own meaning. Tahilim (Psalms) 122:6 says: "Pray for the shalum of Yarushalam; may those who love you be at rest." Hear the play the text makes: pray for the Shalum of the city whose very name carries Shalum. The wholeness the name promises is exactly what His people are told to pray for.

Now hear how tightly Yahuah binds Himself to it. Tahilim 132:13 says: "For Yahuah has chosen Tsiyun; He has desired it for His dwelling." Yarushalam is not just any city. It is the place Yahuah chose, the city He set apart to put His Name and His presence. That is why its name carries Shalum: it is the place He established for His own dwelling and peace.

What "Jerusalem" did to it

When Yarushalam became "Jerusalem," the name was flattened into a foreign-sounding label with no meaning a reader could hear. The "shalam" at the heart of it vanished behind "-salem," and nobody was told that the word for wholeness and peace was sitting in the name. So the city became just a dot on a map, a place in the news, a spot people argue over, and the claim inside its name, this is the place established for Shalum, the city Yahuah chose, was lost.

The English did not only change the sound. It hid the message the name was built to carry.

How this connects to the Turah

Here is the thread that connects it back. The Turah, the instruction of Yahuah, points to the place Yahuah would choose to put His Name, and Yarushalam is that place, the city He set apart for His dwelling. Its name carries Shalum, wholeness, and Shalum is exactly what walking in the Turah produces, a life and a people rightly ordered before Yahuah, nothing broken, nothing out of place. So the city, its name, and the instruction all point one way: to the wholeness Yahuah gives to those who are His. The prophets even say the Turah goes forth from this city in the days ahead. Restore the name, and you hear its promise again: Yarushalam, the founding of Shalum, the city Yahuah chose.

Let us be honest about what is proven

Proven: the name Yarushalam plainly contains Shalum, from the root shalam, to be whole and sound. The text plays on that meaning (Tahilim 122:6) and names it the city Yahuah chose for His dwelling (Tahilim 132:13). English "Jerusalem" hid the Shalum inside it.

Not overclaimed: the exact origin of the front half of the name is understood as a founding or foundation, but scholars discuss it, so we hold that part with an open hand and do not claim the full ancient etymology as settled. What is clear is the Shalum carried in the name, and the consonants are preserved while the reading is restored.

Now sit with it

You said "Jerusalem" and never knew that Shalum, wholeness and peace, was sitting inside the name. The city Yahuah chose for His dwelling carries His peace in its own letters, and English hid it.
