Does Yahuah Want You Terrified? The Word Yara Means Reverent Awe, Not Terror

You were told to "fear" Yahuah, and "fear" means to be afraid, to dread, to be scared of something that might hurt you. So people picture a Creator who wants them cowering. But the word under "fear" is wider and deeper than terror. It is Yara, and it means to stand in awe, to reverence, to hold in the deepest respect. It is what you feel before something vast and worthy, not the panic you feel toward a threat.

The word, in the oldest writing we have

Before English, and before the Square Script, it was written in an older form of the letters, the Paleo Script. Here it is in all three forms:

What the word actually means

Yara means to fear, but the way you "fear" something immense and honorable, not the way you fear a snake. It is awe. Reverence. A deep respect that makes you take Someone seriously and order your whole life around Him. It can include real dread in the face of judgment, but at its heart it is the awe of the small before the great, the child before the Father who is worthy of everything.

So Yara is not being scared away from Yahuah. It is being drawn to take Him seriously, to honor Him, to walk carefully because you know who He is. It pulls you toward Him, it does not send you running.

Read it in the text

Watch what Yara is joined to. Dabarim (Deuteronomy) 10:12 says: "And now, Yashar'al, what does Yahuah your Alahym ask of you, but to Yara Yahuah your Alahym, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve Yahuah your Alahym with all your heart and with all your being?" Look closely. To Yara Yahuah is set right beside loving Him and walking in His ways. You do not love what you are merely terrified of. Yara and love stand together here.

Mishliy (Proverbs) 1:7 says: "The Yara of Yahuah is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." The awe of Yahuah is called the starting point of knowing anything rightly. That is not panic. That is the reverence that puts you in the right place to learn.

What "fear" did to it

When Yara became "fear," it collapsed into dread. People heard "fear God" and pictured a Creator standing over them ready to strike, One to be scared of rather than One to be honored. That poisoned the relationship at the root. Some ran from Him in terror. Others decided a loving Father surely would not want you afraid, so they threw out "fear" altogether and lost the reverence with it.

Both misses came from the flattened word. Yara was never only terror, and it was never nothing either. It was awe: taking Yahuah with total seriousness, honoring Him as the vast and worthy One, and letting that awe shape how you live. "Fear" kept the smallest, harshest slice and dropped the reverence that was the heart of it.

How this connects to the Turah

Here is the thread. The Turah, Yahuah's instruction, is exactly how Yara is lived out. Dabarim 10:12 does not stop at "Yara Yahuah." It says to Yara Him and to walk in all His ways. The awe is not a feeling you keep in your chest. It shows itself in the walk, in guarding His instruction because you honor Him. Dabarim (Deuteronomy) 6:2 ties long life to learning to Yara Yahuah "by guarding all His laws and His commands." Reverence and the Turah move together: you honor Yahuah, so you keep His instruction, and keeping it is what honoring Him looks like. Turn Yara into raw terror and the Turah becomes a threat. Keep the real word, and the Turah is how you show the awe you hold for a Father worthy of it.

Let us be honest about what is proven

Proven: Yara means to reverence, to stand in awe, to hold in deep respect, and the text sets it beside loving Yahuah and walking in His ways (Dabarim 10:12). The Yara of Yahuah is called the beginning of knowledge (Mishliy 1:7). It is joined to guarding His instruction (Dabarim 6:2).

Not overclaimed: Yara can carry real dread, and the text does speak of Yahuah's judgment as something to take with utmost seriousness. The honest point is that "fear" kept only the dread and lost the awe and reverence at the word's heart, which is why it is set right next to loving Him.

Now sit with it

You were told to be afraid of Yahuah. But the word is Yara, awe and reverence, and the same text that says to Yara Him says in the same breath to love Him and walk in His ways.
