What Is a "Prophet"? The Word Is Nabi, a Spokesman for Yahuah

You were taught that a "prophet" is mainly a fortune-teller, a man who predicts the future. So people test a nabi only by asking, "Did it come true?" But that is not the center of the word. The word is Nabi, and a Nabi is first of all a mouth: a spokesman who carries the words of Yahuah to the people. Telling what is coming is only part of the job. The job is to speak for Him.

The word, in the oldest writing we have

Before English, and before the Square Script, it was written in an older form of the letters, the Paleo Script. Here it is in all three forms:

What the word actually means

A Nabi is one who is called and who then calls out, one who carries a word that is not his own and speaks it. He does not invent the message. He receives it from Yahuah and delivers it. Think of a mouthpiece, a spokesman, an announcer. The picture underneath the word is speech that bursts forth: the Nabi opens his mouth and the word of Yahuah comes out. Predicting the future can be part of it, but the heart of it is speaking on behalf of Another.

The clearest picture is when Yahuah defines the word Himself.

Shamuth (Exodus) 7:1 says: "And Yahuah said to Mushah, See, I have made you as Alahym to Pharaoh, and Aharon your brother shall be your nabi."

Look at what a Nabi is here. Mushah gives the words, and Aharon speaks them out to Pharaoh. Aharon is Mushah's nabi, his mouth, his spokesman. He is not predicting anything. He is carrying another's words and saying them aloud. That is the plain meaning of the word.

Dabarim (Deuteronomy) 18:18 says: "I will raise up for them a nabi from among their brothers, like you, and will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him."

There it is again. Yahuah puts His words in the mouth of the Nabi, and the Nabi speaks them. The Nabi is a carrier of the word of Yahuah. That is the office.

What "prophet" did to it

When Nabi became "prophet," the meaning drifted toward foretelling. The English word came through a Greek word that meant one who speaks beforehand, and over time people heard mostly the "beforehand," the prediction, the crystal ball. So the test of a "prophet" shrank down to whether he guessed the future correctly. But the real test in the text is whether the man speaks the true words of Yahuah and calls people back to Him. A Nabi who never predicted a single event could still be a true Nabi, because his work was to carry Yahuah's word, not to tell fortunes. Narrow the word to prediction, and you lose the whole point: a Nabi is a mouth for Yahuah.

How this connects to the Turah

Here is the thread. Every true Nabi was sent to call the people back to the Turah, the instruction of Yahuah. The Nabi did not bring a new message. He held the old one up. He stood in front of a people drifting away and said, in Yahuah's own words, return to the instruction you were given. That is why the Nabi and the Turah cannot be separated: the Nabi's mouth carries the Turah to the ears of the people. Dabarim 18:18 says Yahuah puts His words in the Nabi's mouth, and those words never contradict what He already spoke. So a man claiming to be a Nabi while leading you away from the Turah tells you by that very thing that he is not from Yahuah. The true Nabi always points back to the instruction.

Let us be honest about what is proven

Proven: Nabi means a spokesman, one who carries and speaks the words of Yahuah. Yahuah defines it plainly by making Aharon the nabi, the mouth, of Mushah (Shamuth 7:1), and by promising to put His words in the mouth of the nabi He raises up (Dabarim 18:18). The word centers on speaking for Yahuah, not on prediction alone.

Not overclaimed: many a Nabi did also foretell things to come, and prediction is genuinely part of the record. The point is that "prophet" narrowed the word to fortune-telling and hid the larger truth: the Nabi is Yahuah's spokesman.

Now sit with it

You were taught to weigh a "prophet" by whether his predictions land. But the word is Nabi, a mouth for Yahuah, and the deeper test is whether he speaks Yahuah's true words and turns you back to Him.
