You know him as "Moses," the man who led the people out of Mitsrayim. But the name you were given is a worn-down English shape of a name that carried a meaning, and the meaning is a small sermon all by itself. His name is Mushah, and it points straight back to the day a baby was pulled out of the river. The name is a rescue remembered.

What the word actually means

Mushah is tied to the Hebrew verb for drawing out, pulling something up out of the water. The name is not a random sound. It is a statement about what happened to him: he was drawn out. The one who would later draw a whole nation out through the sea was himself first drawn out of a river as an infant. The meaning is stitched into the name.

Read it in the text

Shamuth (Exodus) 2:10 says: "And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Mushah, and said, Because I drew him out of the water." There it is, spelled out in the text itself. The name is given a reason: I drew him out of the water. The name means the rescue.

Dabarim (Deuteronomy) 34:10 says: "And there has not arisen a prophet since in Yashar'al like Mushah, whom Yahuah knew face to face." The man drawn out of the water became the one Yahuah knew face to face, the one He used to give His instruction to the people. The name that began at a riverbank ends as the name of the one who carried the Turah down the mountain.

What "Moses" did to it

"Moses" is not a lie, but it is a flattening. It is the name run through Greek and then English until the sound changed and the meaning fell off the back. Say "Moses" and you hear a man. Say Mushah and, if you know the word, you hear the reason: drawn out. The text went out of its way to tell you why he was named, and the English form quietly drops the very thing the text stopped to explain. A name that was a testimony became just a label.

How this connects to the Turah

Here is the thread. Mushah is the man Yahuah used to deliver the Turah, His instruction, to the people. You cannot separate the man from the instruction he carried. And the meaning of his name previews the whole story: one who is drawn out, then sent to draw others out, out of Mitsrayim and into life under the instruction of Yahuah. Every time the Turah names Mushah, it is naming the hand that carried it to Yashar'al. Restore his name and you restore the picture: the drawn-out one who was sent so a whole people could be drawn out and given the way to walk. The name and the Turah travel together.

Let us be honest about what is proven

Proven: the name Mushah is connected in the text itself to being drawn out of the water, and Shamuth 2:10 gives that as the reason for the name. He is the one through whom the Turah was given, and Dabarim 34:10 calls him unmatched among the prophets of Yashar'al.

Not overclaimed: scholars have discussed whether the name also carries an Egyptian sense of "son" or "born of." That discussion exists. What is certain and on the page is the meaning the text itself declares: drawn out of the water.
