Word of the Day

Is It the "Day of Atonement"? The Word Is Kippurim, the Day of Covering

Kippurim
How to say it: kee-poo-REEM  ("kee," then "poo," then "REEM")

You were taught this was the "Day of Atonement," a big religious word that most people cannot define, something to do with sin being dealt with, long ago, by another people. So it floats away as an old ceremony. But the word is Kippurim, Yom haKippurim, and it has a plain, physical picture inside it. It comes from kaphar, to cover. It is the Day of Coverings, an appointed time Yahuah set for His people to be covered before Him.

The word, in the oldest writing we have

Before English, and before the Square Script, it was written in an older form of the letters, the Paleo Script. Here it is in all three forms:

Paleo Script — the oldest form𐤊𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌
Square script — the later formכפרים
In our lettersKippurim (K-P-R-Y-M)

What the word actually means

Kippurim comes from the root kaphar, which means to cover. The same root names the covering of pitch smeared over Noakh's tebah to keep the waters out. So kaphar is a real, physical picture: something is spread over a thing to cover it and keep it safe.

Yom haKippurim, then, is the Day of Coverings, an appointed time Yahuah set on His calendar. On that day His people were to be covered before Him, their wrongs covered over, the people brought back into the clear. It is not a vague idea about guilt. It is a covering, a set day when Yahuah covers His people so they can stand before Him.

Read it in the text

See who set the day and what it is for. Wayiqra (Leviticus) 23:27 says: "On the tenth day of this seventh month is Yom haKippurim. It shall be a set-apart gathering for you, and you shall afflict your beings and bring an offering made by fire to Yahuah." A fixed day, the tenth of the seventh month, a set-apart gathering Yahuah appointed. Not a floating idea. A standing appointment on His calendar.

Now hear the covering named. Wayiqra 16:30 says: "For on that day he makes a covering for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your wrongs before Yahuah." The word under "makes a covering" is built on kaphar. The point of the day is the covering: the people made clean, brought back into the clear, before Yahuah. The day is defined by what Yahuah does, cover and cleanse.

What "Day of Atonement" did to it

When Kippurim became the "Day of Atonement," a plain word was traded for a heavy one. "Atonement" is a word most people cannot explain; it sounds churchy and distant, and it hides the simple picture underneath. Nobody hearing "atonement" sees a covering being spread. So the physical, understandable image, something covered over so the people can stand before Yahuah, was lost behind a foggy religious term.

And by naming it an old "Day of Atonement," it was filed away as an ancient ceremony for another people, finished long ago, rather than heard as what the text says it is: an appointed time Yahuah set and called a set-apart gathering for His people. The English kept the solemnity and lost both the picture and the appointment.

How this connects to the Turah

Here is the thread that connects it back. The Turah, the instruction of Yahuah, is where Yom haKippurim is set: the day, the gathering, the afflicting of the being, the covering He provides. The appointed times are not human ceremonies bolted onto religion; they are written into the Turah by the One who keeps them and calls them His. To know when Yahuah has appointed to cover His people, you go to the Turah, because that is where the day is fixed and its meaning is given. Take the Turah away and Kippurim becomes an old "atonement" ritual in a history book. Keep it, and it stands as what it is, an appointment Yahuah set to cover His people before Him.

Let us be honest about what is proven

Proven: Kippurim comes from the root kaphar, to cover, and Yom haKippurim is an appointed time Yahuah set. Wayiqra 23:27 fixes its day as a set-apart gathering, and Wayiqra 16:30 says that on that day a covering is made to cleanse the people before Yahuah.

Not overclaimed: "covering" is the root picture, and the day does deal with wrong and cleansing, so the idea behind "atonement" is not absent. The honest point is narrower: "Day of Atonement" is a foggy term that hides the plain picture of covering and the fact that this is a set appointment Yahuah made.

Now sit with it

You were handed a heavy word, "atonement," that you were never really taught to define. But the word is Kippurim, the Day of Coverings, an appointed time Yahuah set to cover His people and bring them clean before Him.

Go read Wayiqra 16:30 and see the covering made so the people can stand clean before Yahuah. Then ask the question they never put to you:

If Yahuah set a day to cover His own people and called it a set-apart gathering, who taught you it was only an old ceremony that has nothing to do with you?
