Why We Test Everything and Hold to What Is True

Neither familiarity nor novelty proves truth.

A restoration project especially needs this discipline because unfamiliar words can sound convincing simply because they appear ancient. That is not enough.

For a Scroll claim, testing begins with the strongest relevant evidence. What do the surviving textual witnesses preserve? What consonants are written? Are there variants? What root is present? What does the grammar allow? What does the immediate context say? How is the same word or phrase used elsewhere? Does the conclusion agree with repeated Scroll witness?

Then another question must be asked. Which part is direct evidence, and which part is interpretation?

That distinction is essential. Y-H-W-H being present in the consonantal text is direct written evidence. Yahuah is the restored reading used in this project. Those statements should not be assigned the same kind of proof. One concerns visible consonants. The other includes reconstructed vocalization.

Historical claims require their own evidence. Inscriptions, manuscripts, archaeology, contemporary records, coins, and strong historical scholarship can help establish what happened in history. A confident modern teacher saying something happened does not make it evidence.

Confidence should match the evidence available. Some conclusions are strong. Some are probable. Some are interpretive. Some remain unknown. Saying UNKNOWN when the evidence is insufficient is better than filling the gap with imagination.

Testing must also reach our favorite beliefs. It is easy to investigate a tradition we already dislike. The harder test is allowing a cherished restoration theory to fail. If the consonants do not support it, correct it. If a historical claim cannot be established, stop repeating it. If an inherited interpretation actually survives careful testing, do not reject it merely because it is inherited.

Truth does not need protection from examination. Search. Verify. Correct. Then hold tightly to what remains standing.
