What Is the Square Script, and How It Differs from What Most Were Taught

In Square Script, the four-letter Name appears as יהוה. Those letters represent the consonantal sequence rendered in this work as Y-H-W-H and restored as Yahuah.

The term "Square Script" refers to the visual writing style. It does not mean that the language itself suddenly became a different language when the shapes of the letters changed.

Earlier Paleo Script forms look different. A word can still preserve the same consonantal identity across a change in script style.

This matters because many people first encounter the language on a printed page that contains more than consonants. They may see letters, dots, small marks, accents, punctuation, and editorial features all at once. It is easy to assume that every visible mark belongs to the same historical layer.

It does not.

The consonantal letters form one layer. Later vowel points and reading signs form another. Modern punctuation and editorial presentation can form still another. Restoration separates those layers before drawing conclusions.

This does not mean later manuscripts are worthless. A later manuscript can preserve much older wording. Square Script witnesses are extremely important for comparing consonants, roots, repeated phrases, names, grammar, and textual variants.

The question is simply what each feature can establish. A consonant is evidence for a consonant. A later reading mark is evidence for a reading tradition. Those are not identical claims.

The Name demonstrates the issue clearly. Remove the later pointing from a pointed form and יהוה remains. The four letters did not depend upon the added points in order to exist.

That observation is one reason ZoreaYahu begins with raw consonantal forms when evaluating restored names and terms.

Square Script also helps correct another misconception. Restoration does not require rejecting a text simply because it is not written in Paleo Script. The age of the letter shape does not by itself determine whether the wording has been faithfully transmitted.

Witnesses must be compared. Variants must be examined. Claims must be graded according to evidence.

Square Script is therefore not the enemy of restoration. It is one of the major written forms through which the consonantal Scroll tradition has reached us.
