The whole pattern: the program targeted Shabbath, appointed times, circumcision, food, offerings, sanctuary practice, ancestral customs, copies of the Turah, possession of Bariyth writings, and imposed foreign altars, foreign sacrifices, swine, foreign ritual, government enforcement, execution for resistance. It reaches nearly every major visible marker separating the people from surrounding populations.
Directly supported: sources describe a program suppressing multiple distinctive practices. Strongly supported: it would have dismantled much of the distinctive public way of life if fully successful.
Not automatically proven: every modern claim about Antiochus's private motive. Stronger internal evidence: 1 Maccabees 6:59, Seleucid authorities negotiating peace propose allowing the people to live again by their own instructions, connecting the conflict to the instructions previously abolished; the narrative itself identifies suppression of ancestral instructions as a cause of the uprising.
