Was an Elderly Man Really Tortured to Death for Refusing to Eat Pork?

What the ancient record says

2 Maccabees introduces Eleazar as elderly and respected; forced to open his mouth to eat swine flesh, he refused and chose death. Longtime acquaintances privately offered him an escape, bring food he was permitted to eat while pretending it was the king's commanded food (fake compliance).

He still refused, reasoning younger people might see apparent compliance and conclude an elderly man had abandoned his ancestral way; he would not let his survival become another's reason to abandon the instructions. He was taken to the instruments of torture, beaten, and died of the injuries.

What we can and cannot prove

No surviving Seleucid government record proves his execution. Historically supported: Antiochene persecution involving prohibited foods.

Ancient literary testimony: the detailed Eleazar story in 2 Maccabees. Do not turn literary testimony into archaeological evidence, nor pretend it was invented in modern times.
